AI website builder or agency? What a service business gets from each.

AI builders can produce a good-looking site from a prompt in minutes. That is useful, and it is also not the whole job. This page separates what AI does well from what still takes people, so you can pick the right route for your business.

The short answer

Yes, AI can build a business website, and an AI builder is a fine choice for a quick, simple site. What it does not do is decide your offer, gather proof, write pages buyers trust, set up tracking or improve the site after launch. For a service business that needs the website to win work, AI plus experienced people usually beats either alone.

Disclosure: Summit Studio is a managed team that uses AI, so we are one of the options on this page. We have tried to say plainly when an AI builder on its own is the better choice.

What AI website builders do well

  • Speed. A first draft of a site, with layout, sections and placeholder copy, in minutes.
  • Low cost to start. Most builders have a free or low-cost plan.
  • Clean, modern templates that look professional on a phone.
  • First drafts of copy you can edit, which is often easier than starting from a blank page.

Where AI builders fall short for a service business

The gaps are rarely about design. They are about the decisions and facts that make a buyer call you rather than the next company.

  • Your offer and positioning. AI fills pages with plausible text. It does not know why customers choose you, what you charge, or which jobs you want more of.
  • Proof. Licenses, real project photos, reviews and specific results have to come from you, and someone has to put them where they matter.
  • Search and AI-answer foundations. Whether page text is in the HTML crawlers receive, whether structured data matches the page, and whether AI crawlers are allowed all depend on the platform and settings. Check, do not assume.
  • Tracking. Calls, form requests and bookings need to be recorded as conversions, or you cannot tell whether the site works.
  • Improvement after launch. A builder will not look at last month's numbers and decide what to change next.
  • Generic content. Google's guidance is that using AI is fine, but pages made mainly to rank, without original value, are not. Text that could describe any company in your trade helps no one.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose an AI builder if you are just starting out, the site mainly needs to exist, and you are comfortable maintaining it yourself.
  • Choose an agency build if you have a defined project and someone in-house who will keep improving the site after launch.
  • Choose a managed team if the website needs to bring in new customers and you would rather have one accountable team build it and keep improving it.

Many owners start with a builder and move later. That works well if you keep your domain in your own name and keep a list of your page URLs, so they can be redirected when you rebuild.

How Summit Studio uses AI

We use AI to move faster through research, analysis and repetitive build work. People decide what to change, write and check what goes live, and are accountable for the result. We build on Lovable, an AI-assisted development platform, with server-side rendering so each page's full text is in the HTML that search engines and AI crawlers receive.

Memberships are $799 a month (Foundation) or $1,799 a month (Growth), with Scale from $2,500 a month after a scoping conversation. The website is included, with no separate upfront website build fee. Your first membership payment is due at signup. Details are on Pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI build my business website?

Yes. AI builders can produce a working site quickly. Whether it wins work depends on the offer, proof, tracking and improvement around it, which still take human decisions.

Are AI-built websites bad for SEO?

Not inherently. Google evaluates the content and the page, not the tool used. Problems come from thin, generic text and from platforms that hide page content from crawlers. Check that the full text is in the page source and that crawlers are allowed.

Is an AI website builder cheaper than an agency?

In cash, almost always. Count your own time too, and what a site that does not convert costs you in missed work.

Do agencies use AI to build websites now?

Many do, for drafts, research and code. What you are paying a good team for is the judgment: what to build, what to say, what to measure and what to change next.

Can I move from an AI builder to a managed site later?

Usually, yes. Keep your domain in your name and a list of your URLs. When you rebuild, each old URL should redirect to its closest new page.
