Builder vs designer vs managed growth website
| Website builder (DIY) | Web designer (project) | Managed growth website | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who does the work | You | A designer or small studio | A team that builds and runs it |
| Your time | High: you build and maintain it | Medium during the project, then low | Low: reviews and decisions |
| Upfront cost | Low | Highest of the three | Low or none, depending on the provider |
| Ongoing cost | Monthly plan | Hosting, plus paid changes | Monthly fee that covers the work |
| Design quality | Template-limited, depends on you | Custom, depends on the designer | Custom, built around conversion |
| Search and AI answers | Platform defaults plus your effort | Set up at launch, if in scope | Set up and maintained |
| After launch | Whatever you find time for | Ends with the project | Reviewed and improved on a set cycle |
| Best for | New businesses testing an idea | A defined project with in-house upkeep | Businesses that want the site to bring in work |
When a website builder is the right call
- You are just starting and need something credible online quickly.
- Your budget is tight and your time is not.
- Your needs are simple: a few pages, a contact form, maybe a booking widget.
Builder plans are a monthly or annual subscription. As one example, Squarespace listed its website plans from $25 a month billed monthly ($19 a month billed annually) on its pricing page when we checked on October 8, 2026. Prices change, so check the current page.
When hiring a web designer is the right call
- You want a custom design that a template cannot give you.
- You have a defined project with a clear end point.
- You or someone on your team will keep the site updated, measured and improved after launch.
Ask any designer who will handle hosting, security updates, changes and search after launch, and what each costs. Many projects are priced well but leave those questions open.
When a managed growth website is the right call
- The website needs to bring in new customers, not just confirm you exist.
- You do not want to manage a designer, a host, a developer and an SEO provider separately.
- You want someone accountable for what changes month to month, with the numbers to show it.
This is what Summit Studio does. Memberships are $799 a month (Foundation) or $1,799 a month (Growth), with Scale from $2,500 a month after a scoping conversation. The website is built as part of the membership with no separate upfront website build fee, and your first membership payment is due at signup. Our growth websites guide explains the model in full.
Five questions to decide in five minutes
- Does the website need to win customers who have never heard of you?
- Who will update it every month, and do they have the time?
- Who will notice if inquiries drop, and how?
- What does the site need to do in a year that it does not do today?
- What would it cost you to rebuild it again in three years?
If the honest answer to the second and third questions is "nobody", a builder or a one-off design project will probably leave you where you are now.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to use a website builder than to hire a web designer?
In cash, usually yes. Count your own hours and the cost of a site that never gets improved, and the gap is often smaller than it looks.
Can a website builder site rank on Google?
Yes, if the pages are useful, crawlable and kept current. The tool matters less than the content and whether anyone keeps improving it.
Should I hire a freelancer or an agency?
A freelancer can be a great fit for a defined design project. An agency or managed team makes more sense when you need several skills over time, such as design, development, search and conversion work.
What is a managed growth website?
A website built by a team that stays on to run it: hosting, maintenance, search and AI-answer work, content and conversion improvements, on a monthly fee. See What is a growth website?.
Can I switch later?
Yes. Keep your domain in your own name and a list of your page URLs, so they can be redirected when you move.
